Cenotaph Parade 2016
Commencing this year, all applicants for tickets to attend the Cenotaph Parade and March Past needed to have their request vetted by the Metropolitan Police. Once approved a non-transferable ticket bearing the applicant’s name will be issued.
Since this information has to be submitted by early September each year, full details of how, and when to apply, can be obtained from the Secretary.
2016 Memorial Day Report
The Association’s 9th Memorial Day took place at the National Memorial Arboretum on the above date and was well supported. In a similar arrangement to last year, at the request of the RAF Cosford Stn Cdr, a number of Trainees attended the Service in the Chapel and later formed a hollow square around the Memorial. Wg Cdr Chris Jones, OC No 1 S of TT, accompanied by his wife Hannah was the official guest. Unfortunately the Station Commander of RAF Cosford, Gp Capt Mark Hunt was unable to attend due to a previous commitment.
This year, 58 invitations to the Memorial Service had been sent out to bereaved families and of these 26 families accepted (a total of 117 people) although these were restricted to a maximum of 3 per family in the Chapel. The Chapel was filled to capacity with the addition of Official Guests, Members, Committee and Trainees. However, due to the good weather any overspill was able to secure seating outside the Chapel.
The President, Gp Capt Mel Kidd (RAF Ret’d) welcomed the congregation and explained that the Book of Remembrance would be available to view in the Chapel following the conclusion of the ceremonies at the Memorial, before handing over to the Rev Canon Tony Porter, the Association’s Chaplain, who led the Service.
The Lessons were read by Wg Cdr Jones and Gp Capt Kidd (RAFBEA President), with the Prayers for those serving in the Royal Air Force, the families of deceased Boy Entrants and the Association being read by Snr Boy Dave Morgan (43rd Entry), RAFBEA Secretary Graham Orchard (51st Entry) and RAFBEA Treasurer Ozzie Osbourne (51st Entry) respectively.
During the Service 64 Names were called in the Roll of Honour, the Readers this year being:
Mrs Janet Griffith (Wife of the late Snr Boy David Griffith (1st Entry))
Mrs Maddie Thornton (Wife of Snr Boy Chris Thornton (3rd Entry)
Dudley Stringer (RAFBEA Merchandising & Arboretum Liaison Officer)
Gp Capt Mel Kidd (RAFBEA President 42nd)
After the Service in the Chapel the congregation moved down to the Association’s Memorial where the families were able to lay personal wreaths and floral tributes, of which there were 25, not counting the small wooden crosses, in memory of their loved ones.
Fortunately the good weather persisted during the Service in the Chapel and at the Memorial so there was no repeat of last year’s mini tornado which had dampened the proceedings.
