Memorial Day July 9th 2018
This year's Association Memorial Day took place on a glorious Sunday afternoon with unusually high temperatures for the time of year. A contingent of 13 AMM Trainees from RAF Cosford, who had previously taken part in the RAF 100 Year Celebrations in London, provided an Escort for the Association's Standard to the Memorial and also formed a hollow square around the Memorial during the Act of Remembrance and the Wreath Laying ceremony. This year they carried arms, which added to the dignity of the ceremony at the Memorial, and the standard of drill, including the reversing arms during the Act of Remembrance, was exceptional.
Due to the tasking of RAF Cosford in support of the RAF's 100 Year Celebrations and the fact that the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford fell on the same weekend as the Memorial Service, neither the RAF Cosford Stn Cdr, Gp Capt Tone Baker, nor the OC No 1 S of TT, Wg Cdr Jim Thornley, was able to attend. In the absence of Gp Capt Baker, the Director of Training No 1 S of TT, Sqn Ldr Kenneth Place who was accompanied by his wife Sarah, represented and laid the wreath on behalf of RAF Cosford.
A total of 108 Family Members attended, representing 29 Families, with 36 Association Members and their wives/partners also present, not counting the Committee. 67 Names were read from the Roll of Honour and the Lessons were read by one of the RAF Cosford Trainees, AC Kenneth MacLeod, and the Association President, Gp Capt Mel KIdd (RAF Retd).
Later, at the Memorial, following the Act of Remembrance, the Families had the opportunity to pay their individual respects.
The President laid the RAFBEA Wreath, which was followed by 21 Wreaths and Floral Tributes from Relatives.
Sqn Ldr Place, on behalf of RAF Cosford, then laid the final Wreath.
