Foreword by Gp Capt Mel Kidd, RAF Ret’d President RAFBEA (42nd Entry)
In my 35 years in the Royal Air Force I saw time and again the high standards that Boy Entrants brought to everything they did. Without exaggerating you could tell immediately you walked into a hangar or workshop that it was run by a former Boy. Equally, those who left to pursue a civilian career have invariably excelled in their chosen field. That is no accident, and we can be justly proud of the contribution we have all made in our working lives, inside and outside the Service.
Now, of course, most of us are in our retirement years and have time to do the things we like at leisure. For me the Association plays a big part in that. One of our aims of course, is to ensure that the Boy Entrant Training Scheme is remembered and appreciated and we are doing that through the Memorial Window and Museum exhibit at Cosford, the Lectern Bible in St Clement Danes, the Boy Entrant Eagle Trophy, the Association Standard and of course the Boy Entrant Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. More importantly, it is our Association to enjoy. The Newsletter, Memorial Day and the Annual Reunion all help us to keep in touch. In the last few years I have been lucky enough to attend a number of regional and entry reunions and every one of them has been a memorable occasion. The Annual Association golf match against the Apprentices is also well supported.
What next? Maybe Association holidays - how about Gan or Masirah - we could bring a whole new dimension to Saga Holidays. The important thing is that it is a living Association for all of us.
